Sunday Hoon 002 - The Blue Print For The Perfect Sunday Drive
There’s something about the Sunday drive. The alarm goes off earlier than it needs to, the world’s still half asleep, and you’re already reaching for the keys.
It’s calm. It’s unhurried. It’s yours.
Because the perfect hoon isn’t about lap times or redlines… it’s about rhythm. It’s about finding that stretch of road where the car, the weather, the music, and the moment all just click.
The Road
Finding the right road is key…
The Cotswolds Loop will treat you to stunning villages and open B-roads that dance between Cotswold-stone cottages. Early morning is key, before the cyclists and Range Rovers wake up, it’s pure therapy.
Closer to London? The Chiltern Hills Run is a hidden gem. Wendover to Great Missenden to Amersham. Tight switchbacks, woodland shade, and the kind of flow that keeps you in third gear just a little too long.
Or, if you want something a touch wilder, aim south for the A272 through the South Downs. Winchester to Petworth with long sweepers, blind crests, and proper character. It’s a road that rewards mechanical sympathy as much as bravery.
The Machine
Here’s the truth: the perfect car for a Sunday drive isn’t always the fastest one.
Sure, a V12 symphony on a misty B-road will stir the soul. But so will a 20-year-old hot hatch with a manual box and a decent set of tyres. What matters is connection, steering that talks, pedals that respond, and a solid chassis.
You can’t fake feedback. And when it’s right, you feel it in your chest.
The Playlist
Every driver’s got a soundtrack.
For some, it’s 90s garage through tinny speakers. For others, it’s the silence between shifts, just the exhaust echoing off the hedgerows.
I’ve started building the Sunday Hoon Playlist - tracks for dawn runs, night drives, and everything in between.
Drop your go-to driving song in the comments or tag us in your story. I’ll get them added in – the link will be on the website and through instagram.
The Pit Stop
Because no Sunday drive is complete without a proper coffee stop.
Maybe it’s Caffeine & Machine near Ettington, a mecca for anyone who loves the smell of petrol and pastry.
Or Duke of London, where you’ll find everything from vintage Defenders to Aventadors parked outside the café.
Whatever the spot, the ritual’s the same. Cars lined up, networking, laughing and that unspoken nod between drivers who get it.
The People
In the end, it’s never just about the drive. It’s about the convoy forming at dawn, the thumbs-up from a stranger in something equally loud, the post-drive laugh in a layby.
That’s what Sunday Hoon is built around. The shared obsession with motion, machinery, and the moments in between.
